There is no question - in my mind at least - that you want to use humor and jokes as the MC of a wedding. Besides providing smooth transitions between elements of the Wedding Reception, I think it is great if the Wedding MC can be entertaining as well.
To give you an idea of the kind of humor that works at weddings (if you set it up properly - Mark and I explain that clearly in The Wedding MC Jokebook and The Wedding MC Jokebook Audio) go to the Free Wedding Jokes section we have here.
The jokes are categorized so you can see where to use them. The jokes are non-offensive because you usually have a mixed crowd at a wedding reception. Here a re a couple of other things you should have in mind:
Once you use humor at the beginning the crowd will anticipate you being funny the next time you get to the mic (and they will be more receptive) so keep the jokes coming.
Any announcement you need to make at the reception should be preceeded with some type of humor. Everyone will be listening.
